Pulmonology
Pulmonology treats lung-, respiratory- and pleural diseases diagnostically, therapeutically and preventively.
Pulmonology is a medical specialty within internal medicine that deals with diseases of the lungs, bronchi, airways, and pleura. It encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and aftercare of acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Typical clinical pictures in pulmonology include bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, and sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea.
Rare diseases such as interstitial lung disease or occupational lung damage also fall within this area. For diagnostic purposes in our practice, the pulmonologist uses modern procedures such as pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopy, blood gas analysis, and allergy testing. Treatment is individualized and can include medication, surgery, or respiratory and oxygen therapy.
A particular focus is on long-term care for chronically ill patients, smoking cessation, and prevention through vaccinations and education. Pulmonologists often work in an interdisciplinary manner with other disciplines such as oncology, intensive care medicine, or sleep medicine.
Pulmonology is a key specialty for respiratory health and plays an important role in modern medicine – especially in light of increasing environmental pollution and chronic lung diseases.
